What do Starbucks and $32,000 in Scholarships have in common? Read on and find out.
I wish I could say that YPN struck a deal with this national coffee shop chain to get some of the money back we all pay for $3.50 cups of latte. They haven't. However, you never know what a good cup of coffee and a national network will bring you.
Long story short, I've attended the Christian Management Association (CMA) national and local meetings for years and have developed many great relationships. One of those CMA staff persons called me to have coffee and said that in planning their March 2006 National Conference here in Denver, they wanted to give out a bunch of scholarships worth $829 each. So who better to partner with than YPN and our urban ministries?
Of course I jumped at the opportunity and immediately sent word out to our national network to apply for these scholarships. As of this date, we have 24 folks coming from around the country and more on the way. The scholarship includes all of the keynote sessions, workshops, exhibit hall, select meals and great opportunities to meet and hook up with over 2000 people from ministries all over the world, as well as a premiere membership to CMA worth $399.
The ministries will pay their own transportation but we wanted to do something along with CMA's generous $829 scholarship to help cut their costs. So YPN is going to cover their hotel bill of $109 per night. Maybe some of you would like to help us with this effort and cover one night's lodging for an urban ministry. If so, just let us know.
And next time you're at Starbucks, look around. There maybe someone there that has a small pot of "gold" coast coffee waiting for you too.
For Him and Them,
Dean Cowles
