Real Talk

September 2007

I just received an incredible opportunity to serve my community as a Pastor for one of the locations of our Church fellowship! This came as a pleasant surprise to our family, but I honestly felt God dealing with me about serving in the office of a Pastor for the last five years. I came with the usual questions, "Are you sure you want me to do this...Isn't there someone else more 'spiritual' for the job...Lord you know me, why would you want to do something like that to a community??? Well I am a witness to the fact that you can't beat God in a wrestle, no matter how hard you try! So with a happy and obedient heart I'm sharing this great news that starting October 12th I will be officially installed as the Campus Pastor of The Oaks Fellowship of Oak Cliff! I have to share with you that I absolutely love this new job! Even though I am a Pastor, my belief is that for the rest of my life I will affect young people in some way. Now that I am walking in this office I can see that my role as a Pastor truly affects the lives of teens in so many ways. How many times has a student whom we've prayed and prayed for finally received that breakthrough only to know that they're going home to face hell in their own home? How many times have we come up with a great idea that might be a little bit on the edge for the 'big Church' but would work well within the context of our students, only to get it shot down because the Sr. Pastor wasn't willing to facilitate your 'all night dodge-ball in the sanctuary' idea? When was the last time you dealt with the frustration of a puny budget for your program getting cut to smaller size only to make room for the new landscaping project and you're thinking, "What's more important...the souls of young folk or the shrubs getting cut?"

How many times has a student whom we've prayed and prayed for finally received that breakthrough only to know that they're going home to face hell in their own home?

Well as a former Youth Evangelist, Youth Pastor and all around 'youth-guy' I now want to let you know that as a Pastor that 'I feel your pain'. And I would love to take these next several months and go through a series of real issues that Youth Pastors and Senior Pastors struggle with. This series will be called 'Real Talk' and I will hold much of the conversation with my newly hired Youth Pastor extraordinaire: Trammel Orr. Trammel is a Youth Pastor that our church just hired on to become our Pastor of Student Ministries. Trammell has been involved with youth ministry for the past 12 years, hailing from Rancho Cucamonga, California where he served as Youth Pastor of a youth group of 500 students! Trammel is an incredible young man of God with a passion for teens and a plan to make it happen, but he also has a Pastor (that's me) whom he has to connect with, receive instruction and vision from, cast vision to, and become accountable to. I'm sure you all get the picture because it's what you have to do as well. In this series we hope to cover some real issues like:

  • Building trusting relationship between the Pastor & Youth Pastor
    • (just trust me Pastor, whip cream will come out of the carpet)
  • Handling Conflict in a healthy way
    • Knowing what's worth arguing for and when to shut up
  • Give and Take
  • True Accountability
  • How to identify and celebrate results

We are also looking for others so please send in any information that you would like for us to address. I look forward to staying connected and dealing with real issues that we find ourselves facing everyday.

Until next time...STAY REAL
